we hate it when our friends become successful
Posted on Tuesday, November 29th, 2011 at 1:10 pmThis is a morrissey song. I don’t literally “hate” when colleagues of mine are successful – but it’s a fact that most events in my life can be defined by a morrissey or smiths song. The titles are just so so implicit!!!
What really triggered this is that I was deleting emails and came across one of those “linked in” notifications. Instead of deleting it like I normally do, I read it.
I could not believe how many people I had graduated with were now project managers or senior developers in exciting industries or living all over the world! And here I am 5 going on 6 years out of school as a mid-level engineer in all my mid-level glory! I’m not married, I don’t have any kids and I rent a very small 700 square foot one bedroom apartment in a non-exciting suburb.
I’m not unhappy (although I do complain extensively about work and school) … and I would never want to be a project manager (I’m just not built to be anything with the word manager in it and even when I was a software configuration manager I always abbreviated it to SCM) … but I would be lying if I said I wasn’t jealous reading some of these linkedin resumes.
I realize part of it is wanting more for yourself and going out and doing that and I expect my perspective will change as I mature.
But for now — I will pout!
Hopefully I’m not the only one that references the above morrissey song title.
Happy Tuesday my peeps!!!
